Happening this week, in preparation for the Lord’s Day, January 14th

We will continue studying Isaiah chapter 26 this Lord’s Day. Here is the passage for the week.

10 Though favour is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of uprightness he acts wrongfully, and does not see the majesty of Jehovah.

11 Jehovah, your hand is lifted up, but they do not see. They shall see your zeal for your people and be put to shame, yea, fire for your adversaries shall consume them!

12 O Jehovah, you will establish peace for us, for moreover all our deeds you do for us.

13 Jehovah, our God, other lords have ruled over us, but only by you do we remember your name.

14 Dead, they shall not live, dead spirits, they will not arise. For thus you have visited and exterminated them, and you will destroy every memorial to them.

15 You have increased the people, O Jehovah, you have increased the people; You are glorified, you have sent far away every boundary of the land.

Here is one verse we will look at on Sabbath Day, Lord willing. Below are the bones of the verse, its inner workings.

Verse 10

10 יֻחַן רָשָׁע בַּל־לָמַד צֶדֶק בְּאֶרֶץ נְכֹחוֹת יְעַוֵּל וּבַל־יִרְאֶה גֵּאוּת יְהוָה ס

Though favour is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of uprightness he acts wrongfully, and does not see the majesty of Jehovah.

The inhabitants of the world and the wicked are the same people. Under one set of circumstances (v 9) they learn righteousness. Under another set of circumstances, they do not learn. Only circumstances change, not the people OSW.

How can the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness? The inhabitants have an inky black ignorance of God. Verses 10-11 form an essential bridge to verse 12: Only God’s work can bring people into righteousness and peace. There is also a bridge to 16-19: the fruitlessness of God’s people in the world.

Motyer refers to three ways of God with the world in 10-11a:

  1. grace – God’s favour and goodness. Common grace. How about marrying a believer? Young says this compassion might be the opposite of judgment: Blessings of earth, common grace, but also holding judgment in abeyance. When evildoers are appeased or conciliated, they take it as opportunity for more license OSW.

  2. a land of uprightness (straightforwardness MOT) – where circumstances are favourable and pleasant and clear. A land of uprightness is a land where things are done in accord with righteousness, where no compelling force makes men do wrong EJY. But men freely will do evil, because the will is evil, and loves evil.

  3. your hand is lifted high – God doing something significant, either beneficial or detrimental, to call attention to himself (my wording)

Of all three, the inhabitants do not comprehend (do not learn); perversity of will (deals corruptly); and spiritual blindness (do not see). For me, see denial of original sin in IHC.

God’s majesty goes unnoticed. Even when people have a fleeting glimpse, a rare epiphany, a sehnschut moment, God is in the periphery only, marginal.

גֵּאוּת – majesty from TWOT

In the second place we could list those verses that speak of God’s “pride/majesty/excellency”: Exo 15:7; Isa 2:10, 19, 21; Isa 24:14; Mic 5:3; Job 37:4; Job 40:10; Deut 33:26; Psa 68:35; Psa 93:1; Isa 12:5; Isa 26:10 . In most of these passages the particular Hebrew word is translated in the LXX by doxa or an equivalent and not by hubris. Finally we may note the name of the spy sent out by Moses from the tribe of Gad, Geuel (Num 13:15), “El is majestic.”.

Thus we can observe that pride is not intrinsically wrong. It describes a part of God’s character. It is to become a part of the life style of the believer (Job 40:10; Deut 33:29). Sin enters the picture when there is a shift of ultimate confidence from God as object and source to oneself as object and source.

The wicked mind, will, spiritual perception (MOT) is impenetrable, impregnable, impermeable, unyielding to the Lord.

The punishing judgments of God do not bring all men, but only his own people to repentance EJY. Don’t expect all to turn, even in deep trouble. The ‘no atheists in foxholes’ is false. What teaches men righteousness is the work of the Spirit of God alone EJY.

How should believers respond to God’s favour? With overwhelming thankfulness. But the wicked are ingrates.
